In 1975 an Alfa Romeo 3.0 Litre Tipo 33 Flat 12 car won the Targa Florio race driven by Sicilian school master, Nino Vaccarelle. In 1955 the Targa Florio became a part of the FIA World Sportscar Championship after Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR team filled the 1st and 2nd position.
In 1973 Targa Florio race was no longer recognised as a World Champion race event due to safety reasons. Continued as a National event until 1977.
