It was Count Giovanni "Johnny" Lurani who first brought the idea of Formula Junior races as he saw the need for a class for single-seater racing cars where younger drivers could be initiated and become competition Formula 1 race drivers. Elva sports car company was was founded in 1955 by Frank G. Nichols
